Job Description
The Department of University Marketing at Texas State University-San Marcos seeks a skilled writer to develop new print and Web communications and provide copyediting and proofreading support. The Publications Writer will report to the Communications Writer/Editor and be responsible for delivering copy that is consistent, accurate and compelling to internal and external targeted audiences.
This position requires a strong communicator with the ability to organize and prioritize projects in a deadline-oriented environment. Successful candidate will have outstanding writing and editing skills, be self-motivated and flexible, and be proficient in standard office technologies. Experience in a publications and/or higher education environment and with editing, copyediting and proofreading is preferred. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to be highly organized, meticulous with detail and have strong multi-tasking capabilities. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple projects and tasks is essential in this role.

Duties
Develops and writes creative copy to publicize the university, its programs, activities, faculty, students and staff. Edits, copyedits and proofreads print and Web materials. Works closely with campus partners and the marketing team to ensure timely completion of projects. Proposes story ideas and conducts research for stories, including scheduling and conducting interviews with faculty, staff, students and alumni. Contributes to the Office of University Marketing's attainment of overall goals and objectives as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience conducting interviews and research
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making
- Ability to work effectively as a team member on complex projects, as well as the ability to work independently
- Ability to work under pressure against deadlines in a changing environment, manage multiple projects and prioritize responsibilities
- Outstanding communications skills, verbal and written
- Superior knowledge of grammar and style
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Highly developed interpersonal and diplomatic skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
- Experience in editing and proofreading
Preferred Qualifications
- BA or BS from an accredited college/university in a field of study such as journalism, English, communications, marketing or related discipline
- Experience in a publications and/or higher education environment
- Experience using Associated Press and/or in-house style guides
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of key marketing practices
